How to Choose the Right Plumbing Supply House

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the economy struggling more and more, people are turning to Do It Yourself projects. People are trying to save money whenever and wherever they can so what better place to start saving money is on home improvements. Many homeowners believe that when they have a plumbing issue at home, they need to spend hundreds of dollars on a plumber, when in fact most repairs and improvements can be done by themselves.

All you need is the knowledge to do the job and the right parts and tools. Finding the how to can be done just by reading a book or going online to find the job you are doing. The right parts and tools can be found in most local supply houses. The question should be how do I find the right plumbing supply house? There are some people who have a local neighborhood shop and the larger stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Most people when asked would go right for Home Depot. But is it really the answer. The reason why you are doing these repairs or home improvement jobs yourself is to save money, so why not take a few minutes and do some research. Make a list of everything you need and then look up the names and phone numbers of the plumbing supply house in your area.

Ask to speak to a representative in the store and ask them for stock and prices. The larger stores may have more in stock but they may be a bit more money. Or you may find the local plumbing supply that you have been going to for years may be more money but you feel obligated to support local business. In these times, you have to support your bank account and be responsible and get your parts at a good price so the job will actually save you money.

The economy will bounce back but when, no one knows. So you have to do what you can, where you can in order to save money. If you aren’t going to take the time and do proper research then you may as well call a plumber and spend the money on them rather on something your family may need later.

Tips For Painting Your Motorcycle

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Here are some instructions to help you paint your motorcycle yourself and save a bunch of money by doing so.

Materials Needed

Reducer

Plastic Filler

Flowable Putty

Primer and Hardeners

Epoxy Sealer

Base Color Paint

Clear Coat/Hardener

80,120,400,600,1500,2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper

Homemade Paint Booth

To create a homemade paint booth in your garage or shed, here’s what you need to do. First, put plastic over all of the walls. This not only protects your walls, but helps to reflect the light so you can see better. Once you have the plastic up, put fans in the windows. Tape around the edge of the fans to seal it to the plastic around them.

You need to make the paint booth as bright as possible so that you can see what you’re doing. You can buy temporary fluorescent light fixtures inexpensively at Home Depot or Lowe’s. These work great for this sort of project, and they are easy to hook up since they just plug into an outlet or extension cord.

Safety Precautions

There are some things you need to think about before you paint. First of all, paint fumes can be toxic, and they are also flammable. For these reasons, the place where you are painting should not be attached to your house.

If you wire your light fixtures in, make sure that you do it properly. Be sure that you have the covers over the light fixtures to protect them from the paint. You will also need to use a respirator while painting to protect you from the fumes. Make sure the respirator has the right kind of filter for the type of paint you are using.

Paint Equipment

In order to paint your own motorcycle you will need to have at least two paint guns. You will also need an air compressor, air hose and a regulator with a water trap. The first paint gun is for the primer and the second is for the base coat and clear coats.

Preparation

You need to check your motorcycle’s fuel and oil tanks before you begin painting. Make sure they are pressure tested and free of leaks. You should start by sandblasting the metal parts on your motorcycle to remove the old paint. If you don’t have a sandblaster, you can use sandpaper to sand them. Wipe down the parts you sanded with a non oil-based degreaser before you begin painting.

You will need to apply filler to the low spots. Mix it in small batches. It hardens quickly. Make sure you apply it as smoothly as possible. Sand it with 80 grit sandpaper after it dries, then check for any nicks or low spots. Fill them and repeat the sanding process. Once everything is smooth, it’s time for the primer.

Apply two coats of epoxy primer. After it dries, use a spray bomb of black paint and spray it over the surface very lightly. This will make any defects in your fill work show. Use a light finishing putty to repair these trouble spots. Apply it in even coats, then use a foam sanding block wrapped in 80 grit sandpaper to smooth it, followed by 120 grit then 400 grit.

Now apply the last coat of primer. Once it is dry, use 400 grit sandpaper to roughen to surface a little so that the base coat will stick better. Apply a coat of epoxy sealer before applying the base coat. This will provide a better surface and help prevent bubbles.

Make sure you read the instructions for the paint you are using and allow the correct about of time between coats. Also, make sure you mix the paint properly and paint when the temperature is within the acceptable range, or in a temperature-controlled building.

Base Coat & Clear Coat

Apply your color according the instructions provided by the manufacturer, then apply a layer of clear coat. After the first coat of clear coat has dried, use 600 grit sandpaper to wet sand it smooth. Sand until the ridges that appear as you sand disappear.

If you are going to paint graphics on your motorcycle, paint the graphics next. Then apply another coat of clear. You may need two coats of clear over the graphics. Wet sand with 600 grit sandpaper between each coat of clear. After you sand the last clear coat with 600, sand it again with 1500. To make the finish even smoother, you can follow that up with 2000 grit.

Polishing

You will need a variable speed polisher with a buffing pad for the last step, and some polishing compound. The store where you buy your supplies can recommend a good polishing compound to use. Now all that is left to do is buff it out for the perfect mirror finish, then sit back and admire your work.

Car Wash Statistics and Economic Considerations in 2007

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What is the car wash business and industry sector trend for 2007 and 2008? Well, currently, new car wash construction has slowed a bit, due to water supply issues. Although more high-tech car washes that conserve water are getting popular. Labor supply is another issue slowing construction numbers of new car washes.

Also financing due to real estate credit crunch, but I suspect this will change, because car washes are usually a safe credit risk, so more commercial real estate lenders will be looking towards them, this may increase flow and thus add another industry up-tick.

There is a bit of competition as well, you must understand that surveys in the car wash industry are now showing that 4 out of 5 car wash owners report 2 or more competitors in their average trading area 10 mile radius for car-washing, 15 miles for oil changing, 12 for detailing shops on the property.

The trend “right now” is totally flat, although no one is talking about it, by the time they do, it will be over and back up again. The number of cars keeps increasing, more customers. Folks with newer cars are 6 times more likely to go to car wash than those with older cars, which makes a lot of sense.

Right now, I see a trend towards more car wash type facilities at places like Home Depot and Wal-Mart to make more money off their parking lot square footage, why wast the space, when the water main runs along the outside of the property, hook in to it, set up your car wash and work off your already available volume. I am not sure I would build a carwash across the street from a Wal-Mart, Sams, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Think on this when investing in the car wash industry.

Kitchen Renovation Projects on a Small Budget

Image : http://www.flickr.com

We invite people into our homes, and so it’s only natural that we want our homes to look as good as possible. The most important room in your house is the kitchen, not just for cooking but also as a meeting room. Have you noticed that when anyone comes over they always seem so stand in the kitchen chatting away for ages? This is exactly why we want our kitchens to look as beautiful as possible, this is done with decoration and installing state of the art appliances.

If you are trying to find interesting ways to renovate your projects without breaking the bank then there are a number of ways this can be achieved. Many of the home improvement stores will offer you advice to complete the project on a budget.

DIY Route

The best way to save money is to do it by yourself without any professional assistance. You can of course ask your family and friends for help doing the whole project. Doing your kitchen yourself will be difficult and time consuming, however you will hopefully get a job that you are happy with. On the plus side you do get to spend extra time with your family.

The very first thing you should do when you are trying to find a way to renovate your kitchen on a small budget is to make a plan. Write down a list of anything you don’t like about your kitchen, and then write how you would resolve these problems. Also try to decide what you are trying to achieve by doing this project. You can use this list to work out which appliances will go nicely in your new kitchen. You should also decide whether you need to replace the cabinets, or simply refinish the doors.

Another really good idea when you are trying to remodel your kitchen on a tight budget is that you should keep your major appliances where they are currently located. This will save costs associated with moving the pipes and plumbing them in again. If you don’t move the appliances then you won’t need to hire a professional plumber.

You should make full use of the home improvement stores in your local area, especially home depot and Lowe’s. These can give you some really good ideas when deciding what to do with your kitchen. To learn more about these stores you can take a look at their websites http://www.homedepot.com and http://www.lowes.com.

Free Check Printing

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Printing checks has become very common. It is done in order to avoid complications, as it provides utmost ease of use. It is become an easy task and any one with a computer, a printer and check printing software can print innumerable checks. It is a growing phenomenon and widely accepted, as it is faster and less expensive to print checks.

The most essential object required to print free checks is check-printing software. Check printing software provides a cost effective channel to print payroll checks, as well as pay bills. The software can be downloaded free from the Internet, and is compatible with other financial programs for home and office use. This software facilitates the use of blank security paper in order to convert it into checks, with all the relevant company information, and it is free. The information may include company logos, encoded number, signatures and stamps. Many financial institutions, insurers and payroll companies have accepted free check printing as a major in house function. Checks are a mode of exchanging money, and are regulated by the federal government. The government states that only blank check security paper with all the safety features should be used for the purpose of printing checks. This keeps a check on misappropriation and fraud. Large companies that print business checks, save a lot of money, as preprinted checks are expensive to order.

Most of the software used to print free checks also function as a reconciliation of accounts, and includes additional information printing facilities on a voucher. A secure database allows encryption of data, which includes signatures and logos, in addition to other confidential information.

There are many companies that have begun to offer their service to print logos on checks for free. However the buyer needs to place an order for the checks. These companies require the format of the check that needs to be printed and a sharp image of the logo in a digital picture format.

Make a Concrete Block Machine – A Solid Business Opportunity

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Making concrete blocks is a solid business with great profits. Everything from big buildings to tiny backyard projects is built using cement blocks. They are used by the building trades everywhere. There is always a big demand for concrete blocks and they will not go out of style.

You can start a part time business, from your garage, making concrete blocks with hand molds. Plans and instructions for this are readily available. You make the molds yourself from plywood and sheet metal and simply fill them with the appropriate concrete mix. You then turn the blocks out of the molds and let them dry before selling them. One person can turn out 100 cement blocks in a good days work. A local supplier always finds a ready market at building supply stores. They welcome local producers who can supply them with their needs at a good price. With no transportation costs you can make a very good profit and still keep your prices very competitive.

Sooner or later the demand for your products will be more than you can handle using hand molds. At this point you may decide that your part time business is ready to become a full time living. You will want to manufacture concrete blocks in larger quantities. To accomplish this you will need a concrete block making machine. Concrete block making machines are available from several makers. Most of them are abroad and the machines are expensive. If you can afford it go ahead and buy one. They do a great job and will pay for the high cost with greatly increased production. However there is a better way– for a fraction of the cost you can build your own concrete block machine.

Building a concrete block making machine is actually not that difficult. Plans, with complete instructions, are readily available and will enable you to build a machine which will produce 800 concrete blocks per day. The machine is built from new or used auto parts, sheet metal and a few odds and ends. This machine made for a fraction of the cost of a commercial machine performs equally well. A small hand operated machine can also be built. This is capable of making 200 blocks per day and is easy to make and run. You can make any number needed of low cost concrete blocks. You will be able to fill bigger orders than you possibly could using only hand molds.

You will naturally want to produce other concrete products when you are in the concrete block business. You can make concrete garden ornaments, birdbaths, sundials, concrete garden furniture, patio slabs, window boxes, huge vases and concrete urns for the garden. There is a very strong demand for these items and they are very profitable to manufacture. Your small part time home business has by now become a full time, high profit, enterprise. Few jobs can make you the income possible from your business.

The Home Depot – Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus’ Success Factors

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Famous Quote

“We believed from the start that if we brought the customer quality merchandise at the right price and offered excellent service, we could change retailing in the United States. Today, we are the model of what retailing should be.”

Starting The Business

In the late 1970s, Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank were both working at a home centre chain in Southern California called Handy Dan when Siegfried S. Sigoloff, known for disposing of senior management in the companies he purchased, bought the struggling Daylin Inc., Handy Dan’s parent company. Since Handy Dan was profitable, Marcus and Blank were certain their jobs were secure. But they were wrong. False charges were brought against the two that alleged they had allowed a subordinate to open an account and use funds to fight against a union at Handy Dan stores in San Jose.

Before they were fired, however, Marcus and Blank had been working to find profitable ways of discounting at one of their Handy Dan locations. They noted that by marking items down, volume rose and costs, as a percentage of sales, dropped. At the time when they lost their jobs they had been planning to implement their discovery at other outlets, but now they were free to begin building a nationwide home-centre chain of their own. They planned to develop a store where product selection was great and prices were kept as low as possible, and where trained, knowledgeable, and helpful customer service representatives provided the best service available.

The venture began in suburban Atlanta with money from a New York investment firm. They stocked the shelves of their first two stores with 18,000 different products, everything from paint supplies to specialized tools for repairs, cut prices as far as they could, and hired and trained staff themselves. On opening day, they gave their kids a stack of $1 bills to hand out to customers to say thank you for shopping at the store, but by the end of the day, there was still money left and the kids were out in the parking lot using the money to try to convince people to go in and have a look.

Both were dejected and despondent. Marcus remembers that “[his] wife wouldn’t let [him] shave for days. She didn’t want [him] to have a razor in [his] hands.”

Building an Empire

A few days after the grand opening, a customer returned with a token of her gratitude – a bag of okra for Marcus – for the positive experience of shopping at The Home Depot. Though he did not like the okra, it was a turning point, and word of mouth began to spread.

Money was still tight (employees stacked empty cardboard boxes and paint cans on top shelves so that the stores appeared more packed with goods than they actually were), but since the first two stores were doing well, Blank and Marcus decided to open two more, this time in the Miami area. Two more Miami stores followed two months later. On November 22, 1981, the company went public and investments and profits exploded. The chain expanded and profitability far exceeded expectations. Originally projected at $9 million worth in sales per store, average sales went beyond $17 million. Before 1990, 118 Home Depots were pulling in $2.7 billion in sales.

In less than two decades, by 1999, The Home Depot had become the world’s largest dealer of home improvement goods. Additionally, it has become an international retailer with stores in Canada and South America and will continue to expand. Blank insists that the foundational principles of his company, though it has grown so vast, “were cemented in those early years and have never changed. Our prices were low then, and they are still low today. And our service was excellent then and still is today.”

Core Values and Company Secrets

Marcus and Blank, as stated in their book “Built From Scratch”, attribute their success to eight core values:

- Give excellent customer service.

- Take care of your people

- Develop entrepreneurial spirit.

- Respect all people.

- Do the right thing; don’t just do things right.

- Give back to the community as an integral part of doing business.

- Take care of your shareholders.

- Build strong relationships with associates, customers, vendors and communities.

The success of Home Depot can also be seen in how it has encouraged its customers to do it themselves. The salespeople at Home Depot are hired for their knowledge and understanding of home repairs and can direct customers to the equipment they may need for a given project. Short hands-on training classes are also offered at their stores to teach various aspects of repair and remodeling.

Blank and Marcus take “road trips” and show up unannounced at their stores. They say the experience is good for them because they are continually learning from their associates – that marketing strategies have changed because of these opportunities to learn from those on the floor who know more about the products and deal with the customers directly.

Additionally, Blank and Marcus operate according to the “running scared” method of management, where 90% of their meetings deal with problems, how to outdo competitors’ approaches, products that are in demand and what customers are not finding at their stores. Their longstanding objective is to continually work to improve today’s standards. And it certainly has worked for them so far.

Cutting Costs at the Grocery Store – Ten Secrets That Could Slash Your Grocery Bill in Half

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Cutting costs is not what people tend to think of when it comes to getting out of debt. Instead, it’s the elusive promotion or the lottery win that seem to be the ticket. But more money is seldom the answer. The more we make, the more we will spend, and until you get that spending under control, you will never be free from debt.

The easiest way to control expenses is through your grocery bill, and fortunately, these ten secrets not only cut costs, but also improve your life, eliminating the fat from your diet and giving your body the nutrients it craves:

No More Processed Snacks

For what you pay for a bag of potato chips, you could buy almost five pounds of potatoes – with all the nutrients still intact and without all the fat and chemicals. Pop a potato in the microwave for a meal or make oven fries out of them by doing the following: slice a few potatoes into thin strips, dip them in a mixture of olive oil and water and spread them out on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle with salt and bake for 20 minutes. You now have your own much healthier version of potato chips.

Stay Clear of the Freezer Section

This includes microwave dinners, frozen chicken nuggets, mozzarella sticks and all those other frozen, prepared food. Granted, they are cheaper than eating out, but not by much, and they are loaded with chemicals, preservatives and fat.

Freeze a Meal or Three

The next time you make your favorite spaghetti recipe, make enough sauce to feed twelve and freeze the leftovers in quart-sized freezer bags. Then on those days when you are too tired to cook, boil some spaghetti and reheat the frozen sauce. It won’t take that much longer than to heat a frozen meal. The cost will be substantially less, and the taste and nutrition will be far better.

Beans – The Respectable Protein

Beans are a fantastic, low-fat form of protein. Lentils can be prepared in twenty minutes and used as a substitute for any recipe calling for ground beef. Add some beef bouillon to give them that beefy flavor and throw them in your casseroles and spaghetti sauce.

Just Say No To Canned Soups

For any recipe calling for cream of mushroom or chicken soup, do the following: melt 2 tablespoons butter or margarine in a sauce pan and add 2 tablespoons of flour. When the flour is incorporated in the butter, gradually add one cup of milk, mixing well. As the sauce thickens, gradually add water until it is a soup consistency. Add salt and some chicken bouillon and you have a creamy substitute for canned soup at a fraction of the cost.

Avoid Mixes

It takes about five minutes more to prepare a cake from scratch than it does to use a recipe, without all the chemicals and preservatives. Also, don’t buy those rolls of cookie dough from the store. Make your own chocolate chip cookie recipe and then roll the dough in wax paper and freeze the rolls in gallon sized freezer bags. Then the next time you crave cookies, slice and bake as many as you want.

Buy Extra For The Pantry

Set aside some extra money for sale items. When you see something you usually use at a great price, don’t buy one or two: buy ten. Get into this habit of shopping, and you can usually buy enough to last until the next sale.

Use Powdered Milk

In recipes you will never know the difference, and it will save you money because you use only what you need. No more spoiled milk staring at you from that shelf in the fridge.

Buy Fresh Fruit In Season

The health benefits are enormous, and with all the other money you will be saving, the cost is worth it. Substitute a banana and an orange for that breakfast fast food. It will be easier on your pocketbook and your waistline.

Buy In Bulk

Go to your favorite search engine and type in “bulk foods”. You will find hundreds of online companies selling all sorts of foods in bulk, including dehydrated vegetables, beans, cocoa powder and wheat berries. These items can mean huge savings and can be a hedge of protection against disasters (like losing your job) and inflation.

Best Internet Banks

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The online banking trend has caught up quite fast with bank customers in recent years. Even traditional, and oftentimes rigid, banking institutions are now pushing their websites and online presence through heavy advertising and promotions.

In a world that is becoming dependent on Information Technology for commerce and other activities, it pays to be at the top of developments. And in this case, it means having an online presence.

People all over the globe are looking to the Internet to make their lives easier. And online banking is just one way to simplify many things like managing financial resources, investments, bill payments, and money transfers, among many others. It also helps that people with Internet bank accounts earn a higher Annual Percentage Yield than those who still go to a branch to deposit or withdraw their money.

The Best One for You

An Internet bank account should be able to work for your convenience. The least a bank can do for you is give you interest for your savings. And even with this service, you still have a lot of choices among the different APY rates available.

Advancements in Information Technology have enabled many breakthroughs in terms of service and business possibilities. When choosing an Internet bank, consider the capabilities of the institution to harness and make use of these possibilities. There is no use in getting an online account when your transactions are processed at the same rate that they would be if you visited a bank branch.

Remember that with an Internet account, you have entered a borderless world of possibilities. You can engage in multiple investment plans, monitor your savings interest rates, transact business anywhere in the world, manage your forex, and transfer money as fast as you want it, among many other advantages. So be sure to choose an Internet bank that can guarantee this kind of seamless service.
